He developed advanced cementitious materials, RC structures, and design methods in order to enhance the performance of RC structures under multi-hazards. Before these newly developed materials and structures can be generally applied in practices, their behavior has to be fully understood. He is dedicated to develop new evaluation techniques, through interdisciplinary research and international collaboration, in order to investigate the behavior of advanced concrete materials and structures. The evaluation techniques include materials and large-structural tests, hybrid tests, pseudodynamic tests, and multi-scale modeling.
His group conducts the state-of-the-art interdisciplinary research to solve contemporary and emerging engineering problems. One of his current research focuses is the development of multi-functional cement-based composites for the next-generation civil infrastructure. Recent research work also includes application of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) for development of new earthquake-resistant RC structures. In addition, efforts are made to prevent and mitigate the damage of RC structures under earthquakes through advanced retrofitting approaches.
