Personal Profile
Research Area: Coal chemistry
Research Experience:Xing Fan received his B.S. degree at University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). After one year of industry experiences, he went back to USTC for M.E. degree working on electrode materials of solid oxide fuel cells. He went on to doctoral research on ion sources for mass spectrometry at Louisiana State University and was a visiting scholar at Purdue University. He joined in China University of Mining and Technology in 2011, and became a full professor at Xinjiang University in 2018. He has more than 110 publications, and is currently a Tianshan Scholar at Xinjiang University and a committee member of the Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China. His research focuses on separation and structural identification for coal derivatives and biomass using mass spectrometry, chromatography, solid-phase microextraction, etc.
Fan Group research is aimed at structural identification and applications for solid fuels, such as coals and biomass. They use various ion sources to create ions from coals and biomass to reveal the chemical structures. Mass analyzer with high-resolution is used to obtain statistical analysis results, which is known as “petroleomics”. The suffix “-omics” means the complete characterization of a system at a molecular level. Powerful separation techniques such as chromatography and solid-phase microextraction are also applied in our research to separate and reveal the chemical composition of coals and biomass with the goal of correlating the properties and behavior of the products from them. The catalytic conversion process from coals and biomass to clean liquid fuel and fine chemicals is also investigated by Fan Group.
